The rule was true, and the giants knew it – links built Google's empire. Then feeds learned to punish outbound links, and AI assistants began answering questions with no clicking at all. The web's connective tissue still runs underneath, but the open link economy he defended is now something people campaign to bring back. The rule didn't age – the web did.
